As much as I love creating your typical star and crescent craft for Ramadan, I can't help but wonder about the value and the point of the intended activity.

Is the child learning about the spirit of Ramadan by doing a directed glue and paste job? Where is her creative input -- will she be able to connect the dots and make the craft-to-self / craft-to-Ramadan connection?

It will be easy to convey the fiqh of the matter. The lawful and the prohibited are not hard to understand. Perhaps, some activities that help us practice "fasting" will be helpful.

But first, how do I convey to you what Ramadan means to me?

1. A time for self -restraint

2. A time to start a- new

3. A time to self - reflect

4. A time to serve others

5. A time to de-clutter

6. A time to practice

7. A time to be grateful

8. A time for joy.

I'm sure there are plenty more goals to be reached. But I will focus on these for now:

1. Find one way you can be humble. Even though you know you're really good at something, pretend you are not and stay quiet. Give up something you love. Be number 2. Try not eating candy. Try SHARING your candy.

2. Something you're afraid to try. Give it a second go. Pretend you're doing it for the first time. Be unafraid.

3. Play the silence game. Practice peace 5 times a day. Find a corner, a comfortable position, and then listen to your breathing. Make peace every day. (Start with 60 seconds, extend the time as you get comfortable)

4. Do one thing for someone else every day.

5. Clean your space. Clean your thoughts. De-clutter your space. Do Not bring NEGATIVE to your door.

6.  Practice being hungry. Practice making your best wudu. Practice making your best Salah. Practice being the best door opener. Practice your best smile. (Hint: it will always be second best so you always have to keep trying.)

7. List one thing you're thankful for every day. Thank one person every day. Thank Allah every day.

8. Do you know what joy is? Look for joy. Find joy. Practice joy.

Oh, and make that craft if it brings you joy! ;)
